Caring for a family member with special needs can be challenging, and at times, exhausting. Respite offers relief from the continuous care and support of family members with special needs. Using respite services allows caregivers the chance to relax, recharge and reconnect. Respite not only benefits the caregivers but the patients as well. People learn that they can count on others for help. They can form new friendships, experience new environments or people, and have fun. Respite services range from in-home care, day, overnight and weekend programs.
Lincoln’s Lodge was founded in 2019 by Linda and Marty Blackmon. The inspiration came from their son Lincoln, a spunky, inquisitive and busy 8-year old, who also happens to have Down Syndrome and is on the Autism spectrum. Through caring for Lincoln, the Blackmon’s realized that caregivers have a very challenging and time-consuming role, and many don’t have the opportunity of stepping back from their duties and taking a break. Their vision was to create more opportunities for caregivers to get respite. By supporting local organizations that offer these services, more people will be served throughout Austin.
